Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) was
founded in Yan’an in 1940. BIT is a national
key university, an open, International and
research-oriented university of science,
engineering and humanities with science and
engineering as the focus. It is one of the
first universities to run a graduate school
and receive privileged fund from the central
government in “the 7th, 8th and 9th Five Year
Plan.” BIT is also one of the national
“Project 211” universities receiving
preferential support from the state. In 2000,
BIT was listed in “Plan 985,” which gives
priority for development by Commission of
Science Technology and Industry for National
Defense (COSTIND), Ministry of Education (MOE)
and Beijing Municipal Government. In 1999, BIT
passed the evaluation for “Outstanding in
Undergraduate Program” sponsored by MOE. BIT
ranks among the first-class universities for
its high educational and research quality,
strong faculty teams, and academic programs
with distinctive characteristics.
BIT is organized into 11 academic schools and
43 research centers. It also has Graduate
School, School of Continuing Education,School
of Distance Learning, College of Higher
Vocational Studies, Xishan Branch School,
Qianhuangdao Branch School,Juhai Campus and
Liangxiang Campus.
The main campus of BIT occupies an area of
920,700 square meters, with a floor space of
724,000 square meters. Plus, the construction
area for Liangxiang Campus in Beijing is
2,000,000 square meters, for Zhuhai Campus in
Guangdong is 3,330,000 square meters. BIT has
now become a multi-disciplinary university of
engineering, science, management, humanities,
economics, law, and pedagogy.While maintaining
its great strength in engineering, it pays
great attention to the balanced development of
other disciplines.
Great strength in Scientific Research
Aiming the target of developing a first-class
and world-renowned research oriented university
, BIT has created favorable environment for
teaching and research. There are over 3500
faculty and staff, including 9 academicians of
the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the
Chinese Academy of Engineering Sciences (CAES),
1200 full and associate professors (including
researchers and senior engineers), 220
supervisors of doctorate programs, 18 experts
with outstanding contributions at the national
level, and 251 recipients of special subsidies
from the central government. Now BIT has 3
State Key Labs, 4 Labs for State Key Discipline,
1 open Lab of State Education Ministry, 4 Key
Labs of Beijing city. Each year BIT undertakes
over 700 research projects, the funding for
scientific research at BIT has been increasing
annually at large scale.
With the principle of “facing modernization,
facing the world, facing the future ”, BIT is
sparing no effort to broaden its opening and
deepen its reform to turn itself into a first-
class world-renowned research university.
□Brief introduction to the scientific research
and academic Achievements of the Institute
Beijing Institute of Technology, in carrying out
its scientific and technological work,insists on
innovations, attaches great importance to
bringing the comprehensive advantages of multi-
disciplinary areas into full play, and has
cultivated and tempered a scientific and
technological team which advocates science. The
hardware and software of scientific and
technological development conditions of the
institute have been greatly promoted through
“211 project” and “985 project” and the
construction of scientific and technological
conditions. The capability and measures of
engineering and industrialization have been
strengthened substantially. The institute has
achieved a number of fruitful results in science
and technology and exerted important influences
in the society in transforming them into
application. Basic structure of scientific and
technological innovation system with the
characteristic of our institute has come into
being.
During the 9th Five-Year Plan period, the
institute has accomplished more than 700
scientific and technological projects annually.
The scientific and technological funds have
experienced stable and sustained growth, the
amount of which reached 420 million Yuan in 2003.
The institute has won 35 scientific and
technological achievements awards above
ministerial level,published 2211 pieces of theses,
included 436 pieces of theses in its 3 big data
retrievals, applied for registration of 56 patents
and acquired 10 authorized patents.
Key Scientific Research Achievements
The first TV channel initiated since the founding
of the People’s Republic of China.
The first TV channel in our country was initiated
by the instrument-making department of our
institute (the current department of electronic
engineering and the department of optics of Beijing
Institute of Technology),which was completed in
June, 1956. This TV signal-launching center
developed by Chinese scientific and technological
personnel themselves was several-months ahead of the
Japanese TV exhibited on the commodity show in
Beijing exhibition center.
The first set of large planetarium manufactured
since the founding of the People’s Republic of
China.
During the period of 1973-1975, the institute has
set up a team engaged in design and development of
large planetarium and has manufactured a brand-new
planetarium. And it was assembled and put through
a preliminary test at the start of 1976.
The planetarium proved a success in trial
performance. It has made great improvements in
promoting the performance effect, which turns out
to be superior to the original Zeiss planetarium
and replaced that planetarium ultimately.
The planetarium has been put into operation
formally in 1976 and has been running continuously
for 20 years. It ranks among the best in similar
facilities, taking into consideration of its
utilization rate, utilization hours per week and
total numbers of audiences it received.
